At the first session, we get to know you, collect relevant information about you and your needs. It is also your opportunity to dialogue with your therapist to perceive if the therapist's approach and connection will work for you.
The number of therapy sessions you need and how frequently you need to see your therapist depends on multiple factors such as:
Your mental health issues.
Severity of your symptoms.
How long you've had symptoms or have been dealing with your mental health issues.
How quickly you make progress toward your treatment goals.
How much stress you're experiencing.
How much your mental health concerns interfere with your daily life.
How much support you receive from family members and others.
Cost and insurance limitations.
The length of sessions also depends on the therapy method used. For example, cognitive behavioural therapy comprises of a shorter course of treatment while Schema therapy can take longer.
Psychotherapy is appropriate for complex issues that require more in depth, longitudinal therapy. It explores feelings, behaviours, or adjustment issues in correlation to past experiences. It attempts to gain more insight into someone’s problems and fosters personal growth.
Counselling is considered a short-term treatment. It can be solution focused and provide coping techniques.
